Edna Davies is heading for the Providence Art Club when she spots a valuable heirloom brooch in the newly-tilled soil of a friend’s yard. Her discovery helps to solve a 50-year-old mystery but it also precipitates a murder. As she tries to make sense of the killing, Edna realizes more than one person is hiding behind a false identity. Matching wits with extortionists, arsonists and frauds, she must determine who is friend and who is foe before another person dies.

I stumbled upon this book because it mentioned Providence, RI, and was thoroughly captivated by it. I am not easy to please, but this book was very pleasing.

The writing is first-rate; the characters are fully developed; and the story is clever and suspenseful. The story flows and the book is hard to put down. I finished much faster than I wanted to because then it was over. I wish I could have savored it, but like a hungry man too long between meals, I gorged myself, reading into the wee hours.

I read lots of traditional and cozy mysteries. This was definitely not a silly cozy, if a cozy at all. The twists and turns were satisfying and the dialogue moved along nicely and in a believable fashion. The writer's prose conjured the world of her characters perfectly. She pulls you along on a great mystery ride. I feel like I know Edna and Peg and would love to hang out with them. Their situations are not bizarre or contrived.

Ironically, the only disappointment I had was that the author does not really mention Providence and the surround that much. The references belie the fact that she even lived in Providence, but at further digging I discovered that she has lived on the West Coast most of her adult life. Anyone who writes that you can get from Martha's Vineyard to Providence in less than an hour is certainly writing fiction. :) Maybe Edna should have lived in Newport. I thought she missed many opportunities to make the Providence backdrop come more to life.

Usually, I don't like books that let the locale get in the way of the story with protracted descriptions of scenery, so I didn't let that mild disappointment affect my rating of this fine book. I filled in the Providence/New England blanks with my own recent memories. The absence of more vivid references to a place I adore did not interfere with my complete enjoyment of this book.

I was mystified by some of the comments in the negative reviews. This book was really a scrumptious read. I liked it so much, I order the first book in the series, Murder by Yew. I finished it off in a day, unable to stop myself again because it, too, had an appeal.

This author certainly sets up angles that push you to read to see what happened and why. I could tell how much the author's writing had evolved from that first book, increasing my appreciation for this fine, tight read. I'm on to book two in the series Murder by Proxy and will be waiting for more.

I am so glad that I happened upon Murder by Mishap.

This was my first book by Suzanne Young and she has definitely joined the list of writers I follow. Murder by Mishap was a mystery in more ways than one. The author wove several sub plots together expertly while introducing us to wonderfully diverse characters--ones to love and ones to hate. Add that to her delightful New England setting and you have a winner.
Loved this mystery. Held my attention right from the start. Would definitely recommend this read. Could not put the book down!
I really enjoyed this book in fact it keep my interest from beginning to end. This is my first book I have read of Suzanne Young and I really would like to read more of her books, if they are as good as this one. I could tell you about this book but unfortunately I have a bad habit of going into to much detail, so please take my word for it is really worth reading
Once again a mystery that takes lots of twists and turns. Starts with comedy of "sticking one's neck out" and actually getting caught to many more serious plot sequences that one wouldn't expect with "established" families of October ages. The author has you suspecting groups and individuals and then twists in more characters and you have to create a mental list of who seems to be the least believable. Really a great read! Biggest problem is that you want to solve, discover the clues and mystery so you read voratiously and then the book ends. So waiting for the next one. Hopefully this will be a series and the author is working "in progress."
Edna Davies, middle aged, retired but never retiring or boring, has found herself in the midst of another murder. In fine sensible fashion, Edna approaches the facts with willing circumspection until she finds it impossible not to dig deeper into people and events that will explain the apparently haphazard events she witnesses. I still wonder at her energy, Edna seems blessed with being able to go anywhere and do anything( within reason!) if the trail of facts leads. As in previous Edna Davies adventures, we're grateful Edna's frequently-absent doctor husband doesn't arrive home to spoil the fun. Entertaining.
Murder by Mishap was not only a wonderful read as a cozy but the author brought me back to a time living in southern RI. The plot lines, the geographical references, the social contexts of the Providence families were spot On. (I do, however, question how a woman married 40 years can hide her daily life from her husband.)

Worth the read, with a cup of tea, a sandwich, and a bowl of soup by the fire on a rainy few days. I would suggest reading her series in order -- they're all worth the time.
For a light, genteel, congenial venture into the world of literary murder, the Edna Davies mysteries are a good choice. The heroine, "Ed" to her best friend, is not a youthful cockeyed blonde, but a mature woman with husband, grown children, house and garden, not to mention cat and friends, to interact with and the occasional mystery to solve. No question of her intelligence, but no question either that the puzzles are somewhat less complex than those that face the classic detectives. Never mind. These are not intended to be stories that require a Miss Marple or even Pamela North to penetrate the mists to a surprising denouement. These are books where character, family and friends, are predominant, not the Little Grey Cells. I have enjoyed the three, including this one, that I have read. I can recommend this (and them) to any cozy reader looking for a mystery that involves mostly decent people living ordinary lives.
